SCHOOL ORGANIZATION: JUNIOR CHOIRS

Vesna School Organization

There are 5 Choirs at the School: one Senior and four Juniors. Junior Choirs are subdivided into:

  • Preparatory, age of children – 5 years
  • Pre-school – 6 years
  • Junior (pre-Probationary) – 7 years
  • Probationary – 8-9 years

All Junior Choirs’ directors are VESNA graduates themselves, who went on to get Conservatory education. This tradition ensures continuity, professionalism, and unbroken school legacy. One choirmaster directs the same choir, leading the children up the educational steps. The Choirmasters are assisted in this task by the Concertmasters.

When working with the youngest, the main attention is paid to unison and accurate intonation, accurate not only in the sense of correct sound and pitch production but also of timbre and quality. Polyphony is taught only when good unisonous singing is achieved and the kids learned to consciously combine their singing with accompaniment by piano and other instruments, know how to tell apart rhythms, accents, timbres, to correctly find the bottom part in exercises and pieces. This diligent work with its attention to every minute detail leads to Probationary Choir where they will sing pieces already divided into parts; two- and three-part pieces are performed routinely.

From the very first lessons the children get used not just to singing but to creating music anew. This is done by a number of means: by talking, by listening to music, acting out a song’s content, by organizing synthetic artistic performances. It goes without saying that such approach puts a special importance on the choice of repertoire. Since the moment the kids join the Choir, the directors focus on the best musical pieces with the best texts thus protecting them from less savory pieces.

The primary technical goal the Choir educators have is to develop in children, from the very first days, a conscious ability to read music. Assisted by a number of flannelgraf, staves and other props, the students attempt to sing solfege and simple songs. In Junior Choir everyone has a voice part although without the firm order being establishing yet. In Probationary Choir reading music becomes part and parcel of everyday life.

Here is where the kids learn to care about sheet music, value it and restore it by binding, glueing and editing. Probationary Choir has amassed a large music library of pieces for children’s choirs.

Concerts and celebratory performances play a big role in the life of the Choir. Every November all Choirs get together for the traditional celebration “Autumn Freckles”. At these meetings the children get acquainted and show each other what they have achieved in the past two months. The juniors are congratulated on their first concert.

For a New Year party every Choir performs something original and creative. It can be an enactment of a fairy tale or a concert-like extravaganza with singing, poetry, music, gifts and potluck. The January – April period is usually the busiest period as the juniors practice for in-school concerts and the rest tour both in and outside Moscow.

At the end of school year all Choirs participate in Reporting Concert which for many years has been housed by one of the best concert halls of Moscow: the Great Hall of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory.
