SCHOOL ORGANIZATION: SUMMER CAMP

Vesna School Organization

Our school year does not start on the usual September 1, it begins with the first day of our traditional three-week Summer Camp. The first Camp was held in 1967, after our then choir studio had existed just for one year, in the village of Gromovo of St.-Petersburg region and since then this retreat has been unfailingly held on a yearly basis, having become a very important event in the life of the Choir in general and every student in particular. We have had Summer Camps in the regions of Tallinn, Kirov, Chelyabinsk, Irkutsk, in the cities of Vilnius, Klaipeda, Tallinn, and twice in Bulgaria in Varna and Rusa. Since 1983 to 1993 the Choir the Camp was hosted by the region of Rezekne, Latvia. Then the Camp found a place in Slovakia, where we have many friends and admirers, and that’s where we’ve gone on a regular basis since 1994.

Our rules stipulate that all Senior Choir members and candidates go to Camp. The adults at the Camp are Choir and School faculty and staff.

The Camp is preceded by an extensive preparation period. By the year of school year the Council needs to have established the program to be followed at the Camp, new kids are distributed into sections and every one of them is assigned a supervisor. It all is taken with utmost care and attention to detail as one of the main goals of the Camp is promotion of candidates into Senior Choir. It is in the Camp that the younger students are taught their vocal parts for the year ahead and, more importantly, are tested for their diligence, commitment, artistic abilities, and other qualities. The Camp is where the decision is taken whether to promote a kid to Senior Choir, or not. 22-25 candidates usually go to the Camp, of which around 20 make it to Senior Choir. The rest are either held back one year or they may take an option of leaving the school.

The schedule at the Camp is literally crammed with activities which include choir practice twice a day, four meals, two-hour nap, swimming, sightseeing tours, thematic events dedicated to Pushkin, Lermontov, Glinka, Schubert, Schumann, Rakhmaninov, Brahms, Lied songs, ballroom dancing, acting. Over the years we have played ‘Romeo and Juliette’ (the stage being the ruins of one of Tallinn monasteries), ‘The Inspector General’ by Gogol, ‘Le Petit Prince’, ‘The Snow Maiden’ by Ostrovsky, ‘The Snow Queen’, ‘Cinderella’, ‘The Love for Three Oranges’ by Carlo Gozzi.

The kids return to Moscow full of joy, impressions, rested yet at the same time exhausted, grown physically and spiritually, ready for the school year which they will begin head-on, ready and full speed. The Choir has been groomed, strengthened by virtue of new members, the repertoire has been looked over and learned, at least one (and in many cases more than one) concert program has been prepared, and the kids have gotten acquainted and befriended each other.
