SUPERVISING OF THE JUNIORS BY THE SENIORS

Vesna School Organization

A junior member is a 9-10 year old kid whose time has come to get transferred into Senior Choir. This means practicing a huge repertoire, learning to read complex music, understanding the inner workings of the Choir. In order to become a full fledged member, every candidate had two supervisors attached to them: section supervisor, that is, the person who will teach them the rules of section and Choir life) and vocal part supervisor, taking care exclusively of the music side of things. Not infrequently, the two supervisors for a candidate are just one person.

Being a supervisor is an honorable yet a very hard and demanding position. This person needs to (preferably) be pitch perfect, be a good singer, be musically literate and to have good teaching abilities. Under the supervisor’s tutelage the candidate studies not only his or her vocal part but also learns its role in the grand musical scheme of things, practices finding the bottom part, singing nuances, choral chain breathing. The candidate comes to understand that an indispensable requirement of choral sound is not just vocalic beauty but also the way it corresponds to the piece being performed. Here comes a new realization of such concepts as the form, the parts, metric signature, tempo, character. Kids are also taught the elements of conducting. Once a part is learned, the supervisor takes his protege to the part tester.

Part testers are appointed by Choir directors. They are the most praiseworthy senior Choir members, adept at the currently performed pieces. These students are able to professionally and educationally correctly point out the mistakes and means to correct them, give recommendations and to actually instruct on the spot.

We put great trust in our supervisors and part testers. It goes without saying that the adults tests the parts as well yet the opinion of the kid testers is considered just as important.

This is how we live and learn. Our educators are the student themselves who, knowing their responsibility, selflessly take it upon themselves. Of course, everything is being assisted by the adults who manage and lead carefully and tactfully. During the first period of the supervisors’ work (mostly in the Summer Camp), general meetings are often held, to share experience and to assist each other.

Senior students watch over juniors during one school year until the moment the Council decides that a particular student does not need to be supervised anymore and can work on his or her own.

It is truly heartwarming to see how former supervisors and supervisees stay friends and keep in touch long after they graduate.
