VESNA HISTORY

The history of VESNA Choir School harks back to 1965 when Alexandеr Ponomaryov, then a music college student, organized a local choir group in one of Moscow outskirt precincts. March 31, 1965, the day of the first Choir’s performances has since become its official birthdays. The group soon transformed into a studio which then grew into a school.

Today VESNA is a state music choir school, an official institution that boasts a unique organizational structure, singular internal life, and rich traditions. Mr. Ponomaryov has been its Director since day one.

Around 300 children, ages 5 to 15, are enrolled in Vesna. Each one of them sings in one of the school’s five choirs, studies solfege, music literature, and plays the piano. Extracurricular activities include playing the recorder and organ (‘Alexander Schuke’ organ was installed in 1997). The classes take place in the afternoon as the kids go to regular schools in the morning.

The school faculty are all highly skilled professionals, and a large number of them have worked here for several decades. Almost half of all teaching staff are VESNA alumni.

Currently the school is housed in its own building in the possession of which it came only at the end of 1987. Adults and children, working together, have managed to make something truly life-inspiring out of a typical school building, which now contains painting, pictures, fountains, flowers, spacious classrooms, two concert halls, a garden room, a chimney hall, Commons, reading hall, a kids’ playground, a room for parents, a museum of musical instruments and a museum of school history, with a park and a pond around… Warmth and comfort permeate Vesna and this is what makes it unique, inimitable, attractive and loved by whoever visits it. Our pride and joy is our ‘Alexander Schuke’ organ that was built and installed for us in 1997.
